“As a professional linguist, I am a member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL).”

CIOL is the UK's most prestigious body for professional linguists. Founded in 1910, it received its Royal Charter in 2005.

As a member of CIOL, I adhere to its Code of Professional Conduct on language competence, knowledge and continuing education, and professional conduct.

The principles of CIOL

The goals and objectives of CIOL are based on the belief that language knowledge and intercultural competence benefit society economically, culturally and socially.

Goals

The purpose of CIOL lies in enhancing the recognition and promoting the value of languages and linguistic skills in the public interest.

The Institute supports linguists through professional recognition, accreditation and standard setting, and by fostering the community of language professionals. It also works to increase the recognition and value of languages and language skills, for the benefit of its members and society at large.
