I recently translated into English a highly technical document announcing the declaration by the Island Council of Formentera (Consell Insular de Formentera) of the traditional technique of sailing lateen-rigged llaüts as an Asset of Intangible Cultural Interest. This significant cultural practice from Formentera highlights the maritime traditions deeply rooted in the island's identity. The project required in-depth knowledge of maritime terminology, historical references and cultural context. To ensure the highest accuracy and authenticity, I interviewed mestres d'aixa (traditional shipwrights), who shared invaluable insights into boat-building techniques and historical practices. I also visited llaüts in the harbour, carefully examining their rigging and components to check technical terms and expressions against their practical use. In addition, I consulted experienced skippers, who explained in detail the complex manoeuvres of lateen sailing, such as reefing, tacking and shifting the yard.

These efforts allowed me to capture not only the technical precision but also the cultural essence of the subject. The client, the agency Kyö in Ibiza, was fully satisfied, highlighting the accuracy, fluency and cultural sensitivity of the translation. This project demonstrates my ability to bridge complex technical content and cultural nuance, delivering a product that is both technically sound and accessible to its target audience.
